I watched the Drummers Collective video and Dave looked so relaxed....almost as if he could fall asleep. His playing is really incredible. I just can't stand the music. It all sounds the same to me....cheese key sounds,boring melodies and usually a drum solo. I'm not talking about his drumming...ONLY the music. I enjoyed his playing with Stern and one of my favorite Weckl recordings is Bill Connors' Step It from '84. This was long before Weckl started churning out his records with great drumming and boring,tedious melodies.
palmerlouie, I absolutely love Weckl's work with Corea, and a also love latin, fusion and funk, the elements I see The Dave Weckl band trying to combine, but I just don't really understand his drumming with his band to much, yet I can cirtainly hear the groove and Gadd influence (and AMAZING flow), its just to busy for my liking.

Hi guys, my name is jimmy Colford, and I have been lurking in here and reading along with all of you for months now. I think this board is great, and you all have great ideas, and insights into this wonderful world of drumming.
But I had to comment on this topic. I am sorry i hate these types of topics. I understand that these are all personal views, but to put one player or another down, is just plain rediculous. These players, Billy, Neil, Dave, etc. aren't on here to defend themselves for one reason, they are busy out there PLAYING.
You are talking about some of the most influential playes ever to set foot on a stage in this "drummers that don't thrill me" thread!
I have always taken to the idea that ALL players have something we can learn from, (or steal from!) Especially those players who are lucky enough to be playing for a living on some of the best stages this world has to offer.

Hey, dont laugh. I was in a band that covered the Sanford and Son Theme. Written by Quincy Jones. Great chart, and a good vehicle to blow over.

I'm terribly sorry to have ruffled your feathers Louie...I wasn't saying anything about his playing. I just don't care for his music. Dave does get pigeon holed because he doesn't play on many other artists records...he's doing his own thing and that's cool. I just think his tunes sound like after thoughts. Not jazz......

beat hit - u r right about BC's contributions to drumming, & MO'84 is indeed outstanding!! [Monster Gottlieb is on there too]. I heard "Clarendon Hills" on college radio when it came out [would tune to this station; weary of commercial radio, where at certain times they stilll play much hot jazz, fusion, world/ethnic, funk, & swing/big band, etc]; & i went out & bought it...great album.
neber, ben, & sashal - i hear what u r sayin about DW..."lotsa information" [as opposed to "vital information," [img]wink.gif[/img] often]...& the music, well...some of the melodies are a bit 'tedious,' in a jazz fusion sort of way...1 thing i'll say about it tho is, it's "extreme rhythm" [img]wink.gif[/img] , & very much impresses me rhythmically/drum-wise at least..& the ballads are very good IMHO]...but one cant help but know he's 1 of those at the all-time absolute forefront of drumming evolution...i'll say it again; on his own merits, he's every bit as viable [& lethal] as VC, VD, DC, GN, WK, etc...& Connors' Step It is indeed a cool, interesting listen [so are Double Up & Assembler, w Plainfield;]...I was just alternating between Master Plan, Heads Up, & now today Hard-Wired...the title track; Afrique [#2]; etc...try writing & then pulling off some of that stuff with those lethal rhythms, breaks, kicks/hits, & 'turnarounds,' with that timing...simply brutal, man...whoah...those albums still kick my donkey, brutha...DW is a masterful musician on the drumkit...heck, he's [*shiver*] TOO good...

On the first disc, the Weckl Band does two songs that are written by Steve Weingart (The Keyboardist). These songs are notably different than the usual Weckl fare. Hopefully, this will signal a more diverse sound for future Weckl albums.
That being said, Weckl's two discs are masterful and definitely thrilling from the perspective of a vehicle for the drums.
